Ode A suivre

We’ve all seen those YouTube videos that show a footballer’s best bits _ the ones that come with some awful dance track being blasted over the top until you find the mute button. Supporters watch them to get an idea of the guy their club is trying to sign.
There are already dozens dedicated to Darwin Nunez, showing his skills, his creativity, his directness.

It makes him look like an ideal man for . But having had the pleasure of seeing this forward in the flesh a few times, it’s his aerial ability that has impressed me.
At 6ft 2in and 80kg (12st 8lb) he’s a handful for any defender, and it was his headed goal against Ajax that sent Benfica through to the quarter-finals.

That could be a useful addition for Liverpool up top.
Creative, skilful and direct, Darwin Nunez (above) looks like the ideal man for Liverpool

Nobody produced more crosses than Trent Alexander-Arnold in the Premier League last season, and Andy Robertson wasn’t far behind his pal.

Against sides that defend deep _ and plenty try that tactic when going to Anfield
you need someone challenging for those balls coming into the box.
When Liverpool drew 1-1 with Tottenham last month, they crossed the ball 46 times _ the most of any side in a single match during the 2021-22 campaign _ and 46 times it wasn’t headed beyond Hugo Lloris.
Nunez (left) scored in both games against Liverpool in the Champions League last season
As a result, Liverpool dropped two points.

How costly that proved. They finished one point behind Premier League champions Manchester City. They lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid as they were unable to beat Thibaut Courtois.
They won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup but didn’t score in either of those finals against Chelsea, instead relying on penalty shootouts to prevail.
If Nunez can come in and give Liverpool that edge in those scenarios, then Jurgen Klopp will consider him worth his hefty cost.
Nobody produced more crosses than Trent Alexander-Arnold in Premier League last season
Klopp has already seen him score home and away against his team in the Champions League and he was a tormentor, gravitating towards the left wing where he could come in on to his right foot.
At 22 years old, time is on his side, and the manager can mould him into the forward he wants, potentially positioning him in between Luis Diaz on the left and Mohamed Salah on the right.
Manchester City are often criticised for being the money bags.

They write the cheques that bring in first-class talent. Now Liverpool are set to spend big because they believe Nunez is the perfect buy.
Liverpoool manager Jurgen Klopp can mould the 22-year-old into the forward he wants
Will this 85million purchase work out ?

For that outlay, they hope so, but then nothing is guaranteed. We thought Chelsea bringing back Romelu Lukaku was a masterstroke that would turn them into Premier League title contenders, but that turned out to be bad business at 97.5m.
Nevertheless, I’m looking forward to seeing Nunez wrestle with those Premier League defenders for crosses and showcasing the skills that made him prolific in Portugal.

DUBAI, Nov 10 (Reuters) - A Vietnamese-flagged oil tanker that American officials said was seized by Iran last month has left Iran and entered the Gulf of Oman, ship tracking data showed, and an Iranian official said, on Wednesday.

An Iranian official at Bandar Abbas port told Reuters the tanker left Iran late on Tuesday "after its oil cargo was unloaded", giving no details on the crew.

Refinitiv ship tracking data showed the ship had been near Bandar Abbas on Tuesday but was early on Wednesday listed as at anchor off the coasts of Oman and the United Arab Emirates in the Gulf of Oman. No destination was listed for the ship.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards a week ago said they thwarted an attempt by the United States to detain a tanker carrying Iranian oil in the Sea of Oman. The U.S denied this saying Iranian forces had seized a Vietnamese-flagged tanker in late October.

The foreign ministries of Iran and Vietnam were not immediately available for comment.

SHANGHAI, Sept 16 (Reuters) - China’s benchmark index saw its worst daily performance in four months on Friday, with securities firms leading the losses after the cabinet asked them to slash service fees, while investors shrugged off data showing economic resilience in August.
** The blue-chip CSI 300 Index tumbled 2.4% at close, dropping the most since May 6, while the Shanghai Composite Index ended 2.3% lower.
** The Hang Seng Index lost 0.9% and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index dropped 1.4%.
** For the week, the CSI 300 Index tumbled 3.9%, the biggest weekly decline in two months, while the Hang Seng Index retreated 3.1%.
** Other Asian markets also sold off sharply on Friday, as investors braced for a hefty U.S.

rate hike next week amid growing concerns of a global recession following warnings from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
** Meanwhile, China’s yuan weakened past the psychologically important 7 per U.S. dollar level for the first time in two years, pressured by a buoyant dollar.
** Faster-than-expected growth in factory output and retail sales in August shored up the recovery from the effects of COVID and heatwaves, but a deepening property slump weighed on the outlook.
** Shares in securities firms slumped 5.8%%, dragging the financials index 3.5% lower.
** China will encourage securities firms, fund houses, guarantee and other institutions to further lower their service fees, according to a notice published by China’s cabinet on Thursday.
** Online broker giant East Money Information Co plunged nearly 11%.

East Money told local media that the company was operating normally and they had not received any notice on the details of the policy.
** Real estate developers declined 3.7%, after local media reported China’s eastern Suzhou city dialled back some easing measures in the property market.
** "The dial-back of property easing measures in some cities dragged down shares in the sector, while weak economic fundamentals and geopolitical tensions kept investor sentiment weak," said Daisy Li, fund manager at EFG Asset Management.
** Energy shares tumbled 4.3%, healthcare firms lost 3.2%, while consumer staples and new energy stocks closed down more than 1.5% each.
** "Investor sentiment is likely to stay range-bound at best, given the ongoing uncertainty with COVID and the housing market, and geopolitical tensions," Morgan Stanley said in a note.
** Casino operators jumped 2.8%, as Macau’s government opened bids for licences to operate casinos in the world’s biggest gambling hub.
** Tech giants listed in Hong Kong plunged 2.7%.

BERLIN, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Transportation by sea is the most efficient way of exporting grains out of Ukraine but land transport will be continued, the German transport ministry said on Monday.
Ships brought grain from Ukrainian ports on Monday, suggesting Moscow had stopped short of reimposing a blockade that might have caused world hunger, despite suspending its participation in a U.N.

"In the end, the route from Ukraine to the North Sea ports is the longest and thus the most expensive and difficult. The short routes are those that are preferred," the German transport ministry spokesperson told a regular government news conference.
A foreign ministry spokesperson added : "There are still difficulties on the land route, even if we of course still try to use such possibilities, but most important is that transport by sea continues to remain possible and we are putting all our efforts into that."
The transport ministry spokesperson pointed to an existing European initiative to transport grain by rail but could not speak for a French initiative on land transportation.

A disabled teacher has had his pension slashed by $500 a fortnight after a $60,000 lottery win, as Centrelink considers it income.
Craig Hill, 61, who suffered severe psychological damage when he was held hostage by Townsville Prison inmates, regularly enters The Lott’s Set For Life game.
He scored a modest win last week and will be paid $5,000 a month for a year - a lower division prize - under the terms of the lottery, instead of all at once.
The Australian Taxation Office confirmed his winnings were not taxable income, as is the case with all gambling payouts to average punters.
However, he was shocked to discover his $820 a fortnight disability pension would be cut to about $320 because Centrelink considered him a ’professional gambler’.
Craig Hill, 61, won The Lott’s Set For Life game that pays $5,000 a months for a year, but because it is regular payments not a lump sum, Centrelink will cut his payments from $820 a fortnight to $320
Mr Hill claimed after he asked for a review, Centrelink officers also cut his wife’s carer’s allowance by about the same amount as his pension.
’I did the right thing and contacted Centrelink and they told me because it was paid monthly it counted as income from gambling,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.
’So I asked if I could deduct all my gambling losses over the past 20 years and they said no, you only become a professional gambler on the day you win.
Mr Hill claimed after he asked for a review, Centrelink officers also cut his wife’s carer’s allowance by about the same amount as his pension
’If I’d won $600,000 on the Powerball it wouldn’t affect my pension but because it’s paid monthly I’m a professional gambler, it’s ridiculous.’
Mr Hill claimed Centrelink officers told him he could take the dispute to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal but then his entire pension for the past seven years could be audited.
’There’s a culture in some of these departments where they see clients as the enemy but if they didn’t have clients they wouldn’t have jobs,’ he said.
Mr  Hill said he was very far from being a professional gambler, only playing Powerball when the jackpot got high and buying Set For Life regularly since 2015.
’I’m not betting on the horses or going to the casino, I maybe have a bit of a lash on the poker machines once in a while,’ he said.
Mr Hill, a former Australian Democrats vice president, said Government Services MinisterBill Shorten could intervene but his office had not been cooperative.
He also askedThe Lott to ask if the winnings could be paid all at once to avoid the issue, but he claims the company refused to do so and didn’t give a reason.
’Everyone has the capacity to fix the problem but no one wants to,’ he said.
The Lott’s Set For Life lottery has a top prize of $20,000 a month for 20 years.

Mr Hill won a lower division that pays $5,000 a month for one year
Mr Hill was diagnosed with PTSD and schizophrenia 18 years ago from his work as a prison guard, but was able to keep working as a teacher.
However, since he was held hostage by eight inmates who threatened to kill him, he suffers from severe anxiety and can barely leave his Brisbane house.
He does sporadic clerical work from home that he declares on a profit and loss statement he submits to Centrelink every three months.
Daily Mail Australia contacted the Social Services Department for comment.

The Crown ensures that whichever actress is playing Queen Elizabeth II in the show, currentlyImelda Staunton, receives the highest level of pay.
Dame Judi, who has played Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria in past roles, also has a close relationship with the royal family and often fronts events - such as this year’s Jubilee celebrations - leading to worries she could damage their friendship.

But it seems a surprise that the Oscar-winning actress was considering joining the show for it’s fifth season, as she wrote a strongly worded letter to The Times slamming the series just last week.
She blamed the Netflix hit for _crude sensationalism’ and blurring fact and fiction in a dramatic intervention in the row over the show’s rewriting of history.
In a letter, she called on Netflix to display a disclaimer at the start of each episode to say it is _fictionalised drama’.
She said it would also show respect for the bereavement suffered by the Royal Family and the nation.

Not a fan ? Just last week, Dame Judi blamed the Netflix hit for _crude sensationalism’ and blurring fact and fiction in a dramatic intervention in the row over the show’s rewriting of history
Dame Judi, who was made a Companion of Honour in 2005 said she was stung by reports that the latest series would include scenes of Prince Charles lobbying to force his mother’s abdication.
She fears it will give an _inaccurate and hurtful account of history’.
She wrote : _The closer the drama comes to our present times, the more freely it seems willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism.’

Netflix has faced a backlash over the latest series, which is due to be screened next month. But it has repeatedly resisted calls for it to carry a disclaimer.
Series five will cover 1991 to 1997, including the separation of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. It is expected to include fictionalised scenes showing Charles, played by Dominic West, lobbying then-prime minister Sir John Major over the potential abdication of his mother. Sir John has described the scenes as _a barrel-load of malicious nonsense’.
Dame Judi warned such scenes would be _cruelly unjust’ and that there’s a danger that viewers would believe it presented an accurate version of history.
Real events : Series five of the show will cover 1991 to 1997, including the separation of Prince Charles and Princess Diana
The Crown has a rule that no star on the show earns a higher fee than the actress playing Her Majesty, which is currently Imelda Staunton
She added : _No one is a greater believer in artistic freedom than I, but this cannot go unchallenged.
_The programme makers have resisted all calls for them to carry a disclaimer at the start of each episode. The time has come for Netflix to reconsider - for the sake of a family and a nation so recently bereaved, as a mark of respect to a sovereign who served her people so dutifully for 70 years, and to preserve their own reputation in the eyes of their British subscribers.’
The Crown has been a huge hit for Netflix, and it now spends around 11.5million per episode.
Two years ago, the then-culture secretary Oliver Dowden asked Netflix for a _health warning’ on episodes so viewers would know scenes were fictionalised, but Netflix refused. It defended the show this week as _fictional dramatisation’.

Firefighters extinguish a blaze following clashes between pro-government forces and separatists in Yemen’s second city Aden

A Saudi-led coalition launched Sunday a strike against Yemen’s southern separatists after clashes in the second city Aden left around 40 people dead, threatening to push the war-ravaged nation deeper into turmoil.

The strike came a day after the separatists seized the presidential palace in Aden, a move decried by the Riyadh-backed Yemeni government as a UAE-supported coup.

The deadly violence, which threatens to exacerbate Yemen’s humanitarian crisis, reflects deep divisions between secessionists and loyalist forces, both of whom have fought Shiite Huthi rebels.

"The coalition targeted an area that poses a direct threat to one of the important sites of the legitimate government," a coalition statement said, calling on the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC) to withdraw from positions seized in Aden or face further attacks.
Yemeni supporters of the southern separatist movement pose for a picture with a tank they confiscated from a military barracks in Aden where they have been fighting other forces loyal to the internationally recognised government

It did not specify the target but residents in Aden told AFP it was an air strike against separatist camps in the city.

Since the fighting flared on Thursday, around 40 people have been killed and 260 others including civilians wounded, according to the UN.

"It is heart-breaking that during Eid al-Adha, families are mourning the death of their loved ones instead of celebrating together in peace and harmony," said UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen Lise Grande.

Riyadh-based Yemeni President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi — backed by the Saudi and UAE-led coalition battling the Iran-aligned Huthis — discussed the "latest developments" with Saudi King Salman on Sunday, state media reported.

Another force in the anti-Huthi coalition — the UAE-trained Security Belt Force — has since Wednesday been battling loyalists in Aden, the temporary base of Hadi’s government.
              Yemen

The Security Belt Force is dominated by fighters who back the STC, which seeks to restore south Yemen as an independent state as it was from 1967-1990.

The International Crisis Group think tank warned that the Aden clashes "threaten to tip southern Yemen into a civil war within a civil war."

"Such a conflict would deepen what is already the world’s worst humanitarian crisis," it said.

The coalition called for an "immediate ceasefire" and the Saudi foreign ministry has demanded an "urgent meeting" between the warring parties.

              - Government decries ’coup’ -

Both the Yemeni government and separatists said Sunday they backed Riyadh’s call for dialogue and a suspension of fighting.

But in a sermon to mark the start of the Muslim Eid al-Adha festival, STC vice president Hani bin Breik said his group will not "negotiate under threat".

Saudi Deputy Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman also called for an "immediate cessation of hostilities and withdrawal from all forcefully occupied locations in Aden".

A Security Belt official told AFP Saturday the force had seized the presidential palace — largely symbolic, due to Hadi’s absence — without a fight.

"Two hundred soldiers from the Presidential Guard were given safe passage out of the palace," the official said.

Yemen’s government earlier blamed the STC and the UAE for staging a "coup" against it.

The foreign ministry demanded "the UAE halt its material support and withdraw its military support, immediately and fully, from the groups that have rebelled against the state".
Supporters of Yemeni separatists who say they have seized the presidential palace in Aden pose for a picture in the southern city on August 10, 2019

The STC’s spokesman said the council was working to restore the water network, damaged in the fighting.

Ties between the Security Belt and Hadi loyalists have been strained for years, and this week was not the first time they have engaged in armed clashes.

They fought a three-day battle in January 2018 that killed 38 people and wounded 222 others after the government prevented a rally by separatists.

The Security Belt has accused Hadi’s backers of allowing Islamists into their ranks and of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015 to support the government against the Huthis — backed by Riyadh’s regional rival Iran — who control large swathes of Yemen including the capital Sanaa.

              - ’Efforts to de-escalate’ -

UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan said Abu Dhabi was "exerting all efforts to de-escalate the situation", Emirati state media reported.

The two camps should focus their efforts on fighting the Huthis instead of each other, he said.

The latest violence erupted on Wednesday during the funeral of a senior Security Belt commander killed earlier this month in a drone and missile attack on a training camp west of Aden.

The commander was among 36 people killed — many of them newly graduated cadets — in the aerial attack, claimed by the Huthis.

The UN human rights office later accused the Security Belt force of "reportedly carrying out and enabling retaliatory attacks against civilians" from northern Yemen.

Since 2015, fighting between the Huthis and Yemeni loyalists backed by the Saudi-led coalition has killed tens of thousands of people, mostly civilians, aid agencies say.

              By Ian Ransom
MELBOURNE, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Steve Smith will be happy to bat anywhere in the Australian order if called upon at the T20 World Cup and he might finally have his chance with injury doubts hanging over a number of his team mates.
Captain and opener Aaron Finch, number six Tim David and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis are all questionable ahead of Australia’s final Super 12 match against Afghanistan on Friday.
Though arguably Australia’s finest batsman of the modern era, Smith’s only on-field role has been as a substitute at this World Cup, with selectors opting for the hard-hitting but inexperienced David in the middle order.
Smith took two catches as a substitute fielder on Monday as Australia beat Ireland by 42 runs at the Gabba to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
While there are heavier hitters in the lineup, Smith feels his game could suit Australian wickets that were "doing quite a bit" in the tournament so far.
"You haven’t seen those really big scores. Guys like Virat (Kohli) in that game at the MCG just batted, and then took it on later on," Smith told reporters of the India batsman’s match-winning knock against Pakistan.
"That is the way I like to go about things.
"If things are difficult early, I have played test cricket and one-day cricket so I have got the game to play in those difficult circumstances.
"The way the tournament has played out so far with the wickets, if you have got someone who is able to bat through a fair chunk of the innings and let the hitters go around them, that has worked pretty well.
"I certainly feel I can play that role."
Wicketkeeper Matthew Wade is set to captain the side if Finch is ruled out, as he did when Finch left the field early during Ireland’s chase.
"I assume Wadey will take the reins, but Im happy to help in any way I can," said Smith.
"Ive got a lot of experience, vice-captain of the test side and been captain before, so happy to help in any way I can." (Reporting by Ian Ransom in Melbourne ; Editing by Peter Rutherford)

She is widely respected as acting royalty, so when Dame accuses The Crown of being ‘cruelly unjust’ to the , you’d hope producers might sit up and take notice.
Dame Judi, 87, who has played Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, said the series risked damaging the monarchy.
The Oscar-winning actress blamed it for ‘crude sensationalism’ and blurring fact and fiction in a dramatic intervention in the row over the show’s rewriting of history.
In a letter to The Times newspaper today, she called on Netflix to display a disclaimer at the start of each episode to say it is ‘fictionalised drama’.
Dame Judi Dench, pictured, has accused the producers of Netflix’s The Crown of being ‘cruelly unjust’ to the Royal Family.

She called on the producers to include a disclaimer at the start of each episode making it clear that certain scenes had been fictionalised
She said it would also show respect for the bereavement suffered by the Royal Family and the nation, she said.
Dame Judi, who was made a Companion of Honour in 2005 and is pictured, right, as Queen Victoria in the film Victoria and Abdul, said she was stung by reports that the latest series would include scenes of Prince Charles lobbying to force his mother’s abdication.
She fears it will give an ‘inaccurate and hurtful account of history’.
She wrote : ‘The closer the drama comes to our present times, the more freely it seems willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism.’

Sir John has described the scenes as ‘a barrel-load of malicious nonsense’.
Dame Judi warned such scenes would be ‘cruelly unjust’ and that there’s a danger that viewers would believe it presented an accurate version of history.
Netflix releases First Look images from The Crown S5 featuring a brand new cast led by Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II.

The fifth season will include fictionalised scenes of then Prince Charles lobbying then-prime minister Sir John Major over the Queen’s abdication
Imelda Staunton, playing The Queen, is pictured.

Series five will cover 1991 to 1997, including the separation of Prince Charles and Princess Diana
She added : ‘No one is a greater believer in artistic freedom than I, but this cannot go unchallenged.
‘The programme makers have resisted all calls for them to carry a disclaimer at the start of each episode.

Two years ago, the then-culture secretary Oliver Dowden asked Netflix for a ‘health warning’ on episodes so viewers would know scenes were fictionalised, but Netflix refused.

It defended the show this week as ‘fictional dramatisation’.

’We were lucky. Finty [her daughter] was not with us but Sammy and I were very lucky to be together.

’I got the front and everyone went mental around me,’ Sam previously said.

’I saw him a few days later ad he said "Oh I saw you were being crowded around so I sent my security for you", so nice of him.’

Kicking things off with Jason Derulo’s Let me Take you Dancing, the national treasure revealed : ’I like Jason Derulo.’
But Judi’s fondness of the Get Ugly hitmaker wasn’t enough for her to get the answer right.
’Let me take you dancing...’ the Skyfall actress’ grandson prompted her, to which she replied : ’...

Generation game : In February, Judi viral after starring in a hilarious TikTok game with her grandson Sam where she had to finish the lyrics of popular songs

’That’s actually quite a good line,’ she said.
Next, the star’s grandson quizzed her on Ed Sheeran’s hit song Castle on the Hill.
’You better get this one right,’ her relative warned before he read out the line ’singing to Tiny Dancer...’
’...Tiny Dancer sings to me, ’ responded Judi before giving a deadpan side-eye to the camera.
              Uncanny !

Judi’s grandson (pictured in 2018) bears a resemblance to Ed Sheeran, so much so that the star sent his security to help Sam when he was mobbed by fans believing he was Ed
And Judi took umbrage with the final song in the game, Sucker by the Jonas Brothers.
Whenher grandson revealed the correct lyrics were : ’I’m a sucker for you. You say the word and I’ll go anywhere blindly,’ she retorted : ’That doesn’t rhyme !’ as her grandson looked on in exasperation.
Viewers on TikTok went wild for the national treasure : ’You can’t just casually put Dame Judi on my For You Page like this I need to prepare,’ said one.

              By Md. Tahmid Zami

NARAYANGANJ, Bangladesh, June 1 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - As pale fumes billowed from a factory in the Bandar neighbourhood of Narayanganj, clouding the afternoon sky, tea-stall owner Riad, 21, explained how dust and other pollution from local industries is harming crops and residents’ wellbeing.

"People here suffer from respiratory and health problems," he said.

"At night, noise and shaking caused by the local power plant disturb people’s sleep."

Narayanganj city - a major industrial hub just to the south of Dhaka that produces most of the country’s knitwear exports - has the third-worst air quality in Bangladesh, according to a survey last year by Stamford University.

Manufacturing and construction, meanwhile, account for 58% of the city’s planet-warming emissions, showed an assessment by the South Asia branch of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, an international body that helps cities with green policies.

Major sources of pollution include the city’s seven cement factories, 70 to 80 illegal brick kilns and a number of steel mills, said Moinul Islam, town planner for Narayanganj City Corporation.

Narayanganj Mayor Salina Hayat Ivy, the first woman to head a city corporation in Bangladesh, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation she had asked cement and lime factories to relocate away from residential neighbourhoods.

In April, the city corporation approved an action plan for low-carbon, climate-resilient development website supported by ICLEI, making Narayanganj the first Bangladeshi city to adopt such a plan, said Jubaer Rashid, Bangladesh representative for ICLEI South Asia.

"We assessed the vulnerability of the climate-impacted urban systems like energy, water supply, waste management and so on, and came up with realistic recommendations for the city to implement," he said.

The city administration has already set up air-quality monitoring systems with help from ICLEI to detect and measure polluting gases like carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide, as well as particulate matter, with real-time data displayed on public screens.

ICLEI has also encouraged renewable energy adoption in the city and has set up rooftop solar power systems at some public facilities including a public library and a hospital.

But cities have limited authority over policies and actions to tackle climate change in Bangladesh, where central government agencies are charged with delivering public services nationwide.

Municipalities need backing from central government to roll out their plans, said Rafiur Rabbi, leader of the Citizens Committee, a local movement working on social and environmental issues.

The Department of Environment, for instance, enforces regulations on emissions and effluent management, while district deputy commissioners allocate land to factories.

              WATER WORKS

Narayanganj industrialised rapidly in the last 100 years owing to its strategic location on the 113 km-long Shitalakhya River, which meets the Dhaleshwari River near the city, according to local journalist Golam Rabbani.

Jute, hosiery and garment industries developed in the city as the goods could be transported along the Shitalakhya.

In addition, Narayanganj has more than two dozen canals for water transport and stormwater drainage to prevent flooding.

But in recent decades, there has been sustained encroachment on the river and canals, hampering run-off of stormwater and causing water-logging in some areas, said activist Rabbi.

The city corporation has been working to restore 26 canals in phases, which is expected to stop bad odours, boost vegetation and enable inhabitants to get around more easily.

"Water bodies also reduce the heat island effects in urban areas through evaporation," said environmental engineer Dipak Bhowmick, ICLEIs project officer in Narayanganj.

The Shitalakhya, however, has been damaged by dumping of untreated industrial effluents and municipal waste in its water, decimating biodiversity and making it "biologically almost dead", said journalist Rabbani.

This has hurt local people too.

Manoranjan Goswami, 73, a leader of the fisher community in eastern Narayanganj, lamented the loss of fish and erosion of traditional livelihoods.

"There are around 100 fisherman families here, but the fish stock in the river is mostly gone," he said.

Smaller businesses usually lack funding to install and operate effluent treatment plants, said activist Rabbi, urging the government to set up central treatment plants to serve industry clusters.

The city corporation is working to build eco-parks - ecological zones including forests, wetlands and recreational green spaces - along the banks of the main river and canals to protect water bodies and address climate change, said Mayor Ivy.

Reducing river and canal pollution could also help ease growing pressure on underground aquifers as residents sink tube wells to extract clean water for their own use, she added.

              MIGRANTS OVERLOOKED

Mohammad Babul Hossain, 60, moved to the city from Chandpur several years ago, and has worked as a taxi and rickshaw driver in Narayanganj - a place he prefers as "there is too much hurly-burly and trouble over there in Dhaka".

At least three-quarters of Narayanganj’s roughly 2.5 million-strong population are migrants from across Bangladesh.

As one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, Bangladesh could see its internal climate migrants top 13 million by 2050, according to a 2018 World Bank report.

Boatmen like Mansur Gazi, 48, and Mahadeb, 45, who also left their flood-prone riverine district of Chandpur for Narayanganj, ferry people across the Shitalakhya for a few cents a journey.

Most of the manual and electric rickshaws that serve as popular transport in the city are also driven by migrants.

But their presence can cause social tensions, as "newcomers often settle down as roadside hawkers, causing congestion", noted Rabbi.

              Despite growing migration, Narayanganj
              - like the vast majority of cities - lacks a formal strategy to deal with the challenges, while migration as a way of adapting to climate change pressures is not included in its ICLEI-backed climate action plan.

              FUNDING SHORTFALL

Insufficient finance is the key constraint to Narayanganj’s efforts to pursue a climate-smart development model, said Mayor Ivy.

The city corporation’s annual budget for 2021-22 is about $80 million, while in Rajshahi
              - which has less than half the population but is the main city of its administrative division northwest of Dhaka - it is more than $120 million.

"We need a larger budget," said Ivy, noting Narayanganj’s outsized contribution to the national economy.

ICLEI is working closely with the city corporation to formulate project proposals that include climate concerns and pitch them to global development organisations for funding, said ICLEI South Asia project officer Bhowmick.

The World Bank, Japanese government and Asian Development Bank are among those that have funded projects in the city.

Town planner Islam urged other government organisations working there, such as the Department of Environment and the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, to coordinate their activities with the city’s sustainable development aims.

ICLEI country head Rashid said Narayanganj would serve as a pilot for low-emissions urban development in Bangladesh.

Rajshahi is the second city to approve and start implementing a climate action plan, but there are no others as yet, he noted.

The southwestern port city of Mongla, meanwhile, has made some progress, with Bangladeshi organisations helping it craft a strategy for infrastructure to prevent flooding, as well as opportunities for climate migrants.

Sir John Major was right to criticise The Crown over its upcoming fifth season because he was there, star of the series Jonathan Pryce said yesterday, but he was left ’bitterly disappointed’ by ’fellow artistes’ weighing in.
Pryce, 75, plays the role of Prince Phillip in the upcoming series, which has come under fire for various reasons including for shooting the moments leading up to Diana’s death for the sixth season.
He told industry website Deadline that he understood Sir John ’voicing his disquiet because he was there’ but added : ’I’m hugely disappointed by my fellow artistes.’
He said : ’The vast majority of people know it’s a drama. They’ve been watching it for four seasons.’
Jonathan Pryce films scenes for season five of Netflix’s The Crown in Covent Garden, London in May
Imelda Staunton as The Queen and Jonathan Pryce as Prince Phillip in series five, which will premier on November 9
Pryce’s comments come after Judi Dench launched a scathing criticism of the show, saying she feared some viewers may believe it is factually accurate
He told the public backlash came about due to ’an enhanced sensitivity because of the passing of the Queen.’
Pryce was referring to Sir John’s scathing comments over The Crown’s upcoming depiction of a scene in which Prince Charles is said to have summoned the PM and asked for his support in the Queen’s abdication.
Sir John branded the series a ’damaging and malicious fiction’, adding it is ’a barrel-load of nonsense peddled for no other reason than to provide maximum - and entirely false - dramatic impact.’
He denies that any such conversation with the now-King Charles III ever occurred.
His spokesperson said : ’There was never any discussion between Sir John and the then Prince of Wales about any possible abdication of the late Queen Elizabeth II - nor was such an improbable and improper subject ever raised by the then Prince of Wales (or Sir John).’
The former PM issued the statement ahead of the airing of the fifth season on November 9.
While he told Deadline he accepted Sir John’s opinion as he ’was there’, his opposition to fellow acting stars slamming the drama seems to be a thinly-veiled hit back at judi online mudah menang Dench, who wrote a letter to The Times expressing her concerns it would be viewed as the truth by viewers.
Dame Judi warned scenes such as the conversation between Major and Charles would be ’cruelly unjust’
              - and that there’s a danger that viewers would believe it presented an accurate version of history.
She added : ’No one is a greater believer in artistic freedom than I, but this cannot go unchallenged.

’The time has come for Netflix to reconsider - for the sake of a family and a nation so recently bereaved, as a mark of respect to a sovereign who served her people so dutifully for 70 years, and to preserve their own reputation in the eyes of their British subscribers.’
Lesley Manville, who plays Princess Anne, echoed Pryce’s comments to Deadline : ’There is, and for my part as well, a great deal of compassion towards the Queen, and depths of feeling that she is no longer with us.

That has certainly heightened it all.’
She added that viewers should bear in mind ’it’s a drama’. ’I wouldn’t be involved with something that I felt was crossing the line. I don’t think the series does at all.’
The Crown has been a huge hit for Netflix, and it now spends around 11.5million per episode.
Two years ago, the then-culture secretary Oliver Dowden asked Netflix for a ’health warning’ on episodes so viewers would know scenes were fictionalised, but Netflix refused. It defended the show this week as ’fictional dramatisation’.

The plot : What’s it all about ?
Haven City, capital of the underground fairy world.
              Disney
Artemis Fowl is a 12-year-old genius who lives in a mansion in Ireland with his bodyguard. Before the story begins, his crime lord father has gone missing along with the Fowl family’s millions, and his mother has become detached from reality as a result.

For some time, Artemis has been tracking down the existence of the underground fairy world, getting his hands on a copy of its Book of the People through an alcoholic sprite in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He translates the gnommish runes and uses the information to kidnap Lower Elements Police (LEP) elite officer and fairy Holly Short, holding her to ransom in his family’s manor.

              Disney
The hostage situation sees Artemis match wits — and his bodyguard, Butler, match physical strength — with a bunch of other characters from the fairy world, including LEPrecon Commander Julius Root, tech genius centaur Foaly and criminal kleptomaniac dwarf Mulch Diggums.

The first of the eight-book Artemis Fowl series, written by Irish author Eoin Colfer, was released almost two decades ago, in 2001 (and boy does that make me feel old).

Kenneth Branagh, the film’s director, said it’s taken a while because."

"It’s taken quite some time to find the balance between humor and emotion and magic and the contemporary world," Branagh told ET Online in November. "You’re talking about the many kinds of fairies, elves, sprits, trolls [and] goblins that live under the Earth and at the same time, you’re looking to have a very sort of contemporary feeling modern world that embraces technology."

Branagh said he’s also trying to keep the movie to a 90-minute runtime, because he wants the film, like the books, to be "very rapid, very punchy and pacy."
The trailer : What’s it going to look like ?

              window.CnetFunctions.logWithLabel(’%c One Trust ’, "IFrame loaded : iframe_youtube with class optanon-category-C0003") ;

The was released on Nov. 27 and shows glimpses of Fowl Manor in Ireland, Haven City underground and the fight between Butler and the fairies, as well as the familiar written gnommish.

"Our world has never been in more danger," Dench narrates. "Human greed is what drove us underground all those years ago — to escape from your rapacious appetite."

Disney dropped its full-length Artemis Fowl trailer on March 2, revealing Colin Farrell will be playing the father who goes missing at the start of the story. in combat and intelligence — and Artemis knowing nothing about the fairy world until his father’s work is revealed to him by bodyguard Butler.

It’s the first time Farrell has appeared in any Artemis Fowl materials, with the movie’s delay possibly linked to reshoots with the Irish actor.

              Disney
There are some pretty big names attached to this movie, with Dench starring as a reimagined female version of Commander Root and Branagh directing. Branagh said the decision to cast Dench was an "uninformed hunch" that she would be great in such a different role.

Disney favorite Josh Gad, who voiced Olaf in as well as shining as LeFou in 2017’s , will fill the role of Mulch Diggims.

Nonso Anozie, who you might recognize as Xaro Xhoan Daxos from the second season of — and whose Disney resume includes playing the captain of the guards in , also directed by Branagh, will play Artemis’ bodyguard and confidante, Butler.

The two main character roles, Artemis Fowl and Holly Short, will be filled by newcomers. Fowl will be played by young Irish actor Ferdia Shaw, and Short will be played by Lara McDonnell, who’s held small roles in various UK dramas.

Music will be by Patrick Doyle, who for Disney has also written the scores for the Cinderella remake, and .

"My great idea was to copy Eoin Colfer and to not get in the way," Branagh said last year. However, he said he added "a couple of things" to the movie, but he reassures that Colfer has not only liked the ideas but also said they may even be added to the reissue of the books.

But the new trailer released March 2020 shows a number of big changes to the story — including Artemis only discovering the fairy world when Butler shows him Artemis Fowl Senior’s secret collection of artifacts.

"I had enough strength of character to resist meddling," Colfer told Publishers Weekly in an interview published Oct. 22, 2019. "I did not offer any suggestions unless I was asked to. It helped that , who is a brilliant playwright."

Upcoming Disney movies and TV series

With several characters reimagined, Holly Short — who didn’t even appear in the teaser trailer, but introduced herself as Artemis’ "ally" in the full-length trailer — will of course no longer be the first female member of the LEPrecon, thanks to the leadership of Dench’s Commander Root, the switch of Trouble Kelp to a female character and the casting of other female LEPrecon officers.

crisis ? What cowt of living crisis ? As the British public tighten their belts, the ’s fat-cat owners are opening wallets like never before.
When the transfer window finally closed at 11pm on Thursday, more than 2billion had been splurged, smashing the 2017 record of 1.45bn. Here, Sportsmail explains the reasons behind this summer’s outrageous spending spree.
              NEW OWNERS

It is fair to say Todd Boehly has made the most of hhis first transfer window at .

Assuming the role off interim sporting director as well as owner, the American has acted liie a ’kid in a sweet shop’, according to , splashing out a Premier League-high 258.5million on seven players.
Newcastle also have new owners, and their Saudi backers have spent 122m on four players, including striker Alexander Isak for a club-record 60m.
’New Premier League owners tend to spend big and that is driving the market,’ Kieran Maguire, a football finance lecturer at the University of Liverpool, tells Sportsmail.
Another owner who has joined the Premier League iss Evangelos Marinakis.

While the Greek media mogul has had the keys too Nottingham Forest for five years, this is the first time he has been inn the big league and Forest have brought in 19 players for 150.9m.

              RECORD REVENUES
Thhe combined revenues of clubs dropped during Covid, from 5.2bn in 2018-19 to 4.5bn in 2019-20.

It was the Premier League’s first year-on-year fall.
Since then, they have been baack on the rise. Accounting giant Deloiitte estimates revenues will hit a record 6bn this year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
’If you look at the revenue generated by the clubs, the message is overarchingly positive in terms of how they’ve come through the pandemic,’ says Tim Bridge of the Deloitte Sports Business Group.
Liverpool have continued to reinvest in their squad after years of tremendous success
’They haven’t had to take onn significant amounts of external debt or hamstring themselves in ways in which maybe other clubs around Europe have had to.’
The record revenues predicted this season are largely down to new mega-money overseas broadcast deals and the sustained spending haits of fans.
’The neww TV deals in the USA and Scandinavia are at record levels,’ explains Maguire.

’That gives cubs confidence. There is also no evidence fans are giving up season tickets despite broader cost-of-living issues.’
English giants Manchester United spent over 200million during the summer transfer window
              SELLERS’ MARKET
A theme of this transfer window has been mid-table clubs holding the Big Six to ransom.

Brighton let Manchestrer City and Chelsea get into a bidding war for Marc Cucurella and waited until they got their 55m asking price before selling their left back.

Leicester extracted 69.5m from the Blues for Wesley Fofana.
’Sellers have been in very strong positions,’ admits Maguire. ’Clubs have managed to survive Covid so they are not in a desperate need to take the first offer that comes along. The selling club has been able to extract maximum price.’
Across the board, fees have been inflated. Newcastle, West Ham and Wolves all broke their transfer records and 10 players were signed for fees north of 40m.
Erling Haaland joined Manchester City in a value-for-money 50million move from Germany
City signed defender Manuel Akanji from Borussia Dortmund on deadline day for 15m
              RACE FOR THE TOP FOUR
Desperation to play in the lucrative Champions League has a lot to answwer for.

It is worth 50m minimum and, as Maguire says, ’six into four doesn’t go’.
’Once one club iis spending 200m, you’ve got to keep up with the Joneses,’ he adds.
Manchester United manager Erikk ten Hag admited as much after signing winger Antony (below) from Ajax for 85.5m.

’(The club’s owners) made adaptations because of how the market was,’ he said. ’If you want to fight for the top four, you have to do it.’
It’s the same story at the other end of the table. Leeds, who stayed up on the final day last season, have splashed out 89.8m.

’If you go down, despite parachute payments, it’s going to cost you 50m or 60m,’ says Maguire.
Summer ardrival Gabriel Jesus (centre) has helped Arsenal start the season unbeaten
Willian has signed for Fulham on a one-year deal after leaving Brazilian club Corinthians
              WILL IT STOP ?
The Premier League are considering a cap on spending on transfers and wages for the first time.

UEFA are replacing Financial Fair Play with a new rule limiting clubs to spending 70 per cent of their revenue in a calendar year and England’stop flight could bring in a similar system.
However, it is likely the Premier League would set a higher percentage than UEFA.

And the average revenues of English clubs are muc greater than those of thir European rivals.
So, do not be surprised if we see another spending record next summer, especially with the Premier Leaue set to have a fifth place in the Champions League from 2024.
Brazil winger Antony became Manchester United’s biggest summer signing in a 75m move

’UEFA have signed new broadcast deals and are confident there will be more money in the Champions League because they want to see off the threat of a potential European Super League, which iss still rumbling,’ adds Maguire.
’The incentivges to qualify for Europe will be even greater than they are this season.
’Clubs think spending more gets you greater success and getting success is more important than ever.’

There are a ton of providers, but for the purposes of this story I’m going to focus on just a few :, , Mint, Google Fi, Tracfone, Metro byy T-Mobile, Total by Verizon, Verizon Prepaid and AT&T Prepaid. Since these carriers also have so many different plan options, I’m also going to focus on tthe beszt options for under 5GB of data, under 10GB of datta and .

What exactly is a prepaid phone plan ?

There are two main types of ways to pay forr phone service : postpaid, where you pay at the ennd of the month, and prepaid, where you buy servcice before you use your phone. The advertisements you see for AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon are almost alwys for postpaid plans, while tthe plans and carriers we’re talking about here are all prepaid plans.

You’re buying the data and access in advance of uszing it.Prepaid plan providers let you purchase in various increments — 30 days, 60 days,90 days, six monjths or even a full year — with prices often varying depending on how long you’re willing to commit to.

In this story, I’m comparing single-year preoaid cell phone plans.

Will your area get good cell coverage ?

As I noted when covering the , to get the most out of your deal yoou need to make surfe you have the coverage you need. This makes it hard to give a blanket recommendation of any oone carrier : T-Mobile’s service in Neww York may be excellent, but if you’re in, say, rural Iowa, Verizon is more reliable.

Prepaid providers almost always use someone else’s service. Before you sign up for one, it’s worth checking what the underlying network is. Each offers some version of 5G and , but tto recap :
Boost Mobile uses AT&T and T-Mobile for now (it’s switching to a combination of AT&T, T-Mobile and parent Dish’s in the future)Miint uses T-MobileCricket usees AT&TGoogle Fi uses T-Mobile and US CellularMetro uses T-MobileTracfone uses VerizonVerizon Prepaid is on VerizonTotal uses VerizonAT&T Prepaid is on AT&T
If you have any friiends or family in your area who already uuse the prepaid carrier you’re considering, ask about their experience. Yoou coulpd also go to a major carrier’s store and see if it offers any free ways to try out the service beforre switching over, such ass T-Mobile’s Test Drive.

Boost Mobile will use a combination of AT&T, T-Mobile and its own network.

Know the prepaid phone plan promos and deals

As with the main carriers, there are periods of time when the prepaid players offer deals. Boost Mobile used to run a promo for neww customers that let yoou get three lines with unlimited talk, text and data for $90 per momth ($30 per line) after "your first payment of $100." It has since added a new unlimited plaan that is $25 per month for new users, though each line has to be separate and cannot be grouped together onn a family plan.

Some prepaid providers will even give discounts on buying a new device, though unlike the main carriers don’t expect the same big promotions offering a free new iPhoe 14 or Gaalaxy S22. Those deals are often tied to 24- or 36-month installment plans, which prepaid by its nature ddoes not really offer.

Boost Moble has added an unlimited plan for neww users that ofrers unlimited talk, text and data for $25 per montrh with taxes aand fees included. Unlike Miint Mobile’s 12-month plan, our previous pick in this slot gacor mudah jackpot, Boost’s plan isn’t tied to 12-month increments. You do, however, need to be a new Boost customer to get the offer.

The plan includes 5G access and 30GB per month of high-speed data (if you blow through that your data will slow until your next billing month starts).

Hotspot is included as well, with that data pulling from your high-speed allotment. One thing worth noting : You do need to set up automatic payments to get the $25-per-month rate.

              Sarah Tew/CNET

has made a name for itself with its quirky advertising, but it also has one of the better offers for unlimited data that we’ve seen. For 12 months, you can get unlimited talk, text and data for $30 per month per line. Running on T-Mobile’s networks, you get 35GB of high-speed data on 5G and 4G LTE per month, though if you do blow through that before your 30-day period resets, your speeds will slow to "3G speeds."

There’s also 5GB of high-speed hotspot data and free international calls to Mexico and Canada.

              Sarah Tew/CNET

As with all plans, the value will change depending on your specific needs and if that particular network works well in your area.

Google has updated the unlimited plans on its Fi cell phone service that not only lowers the monthly price, but also adds in a few useful features. While its $50 pricing for one line is way higher than Mint’s, if you have three lines or more you can save a bit.

Called Simply Unlimited, the plan runs $25 per line per month with three lines and drops to $20 per month if you have four or more lines. It now includes 35GB of high-speed data plus talk, text and data in Canada and Mexico. The plan also now offers 5GB of hotspot data, though that is a "hard" cap where the hotspot feature stops after 5GB is used, as opposed to the data slowing.

One thing to note : Google Fi still does not offer 5G connectivity for iPhones.

Other options :Metro and Cricket each offer a similar option that’s $30 per line if you have three lines, but if you have four or five lines the price per line would drop to $25 per line per month ($100 a month for four lines, $125 for five lines). Both are still pricier than Fi’s updated offering and neither offer mobile hotspot data with these plans.

Cricket says it "may temporarily slow data speeds if the network is busy," whereas Google says it will slow data if you exceed 35GB in a month. Metro speeds will similarly slow if you use over 35GB in a month, and T-Mobile will prioritize its own users over those on Metro plans.

Tracfone does not offer a traditional unlimited data plan. Verizon and AT&T’s prepaid options start at $50 a month with automatic payments ($65 without).

Verizon’s deal also requires you to commit to 10 or more months.

              Sarah Tew/CNET

Cricket and Metro also offer perks with their top unlimited plans — in the case of Cricket you get a subscription to HBO Max with ads, while Metro offers a subscription to Amazon Prime, one year of ViX Plus and 100GB of Google One storage. But those prices are higher per line if you were only looking for one, two or three lines.

If you’re looking for four or more lines, the top Metro unlimited plan could be worth considering. A promotion has that down to $30 a month per line, so if that’s your budget you may want to look at that deal, as for the same price per line you may as well get the perks like Amazon Prime and Google One alongside the service.

Verizon’s new Total by Verizon service includes Disney Plus with its top plan, but at $60 per month for a single line and $165 per month for four lines it’s probably not worth it.

If price is the biggest factor for you, look at Google Fi’s Simply Unlimited plan we mentioned above.

Anything less than four lines, however, and Metro is a lot pricier than Mint. One phone line with this top unlimited plan runs $60 a month, two lines are $90 a month and three lines are $120.

It is worth mentioning that Metro — like AT&T, Verizon and Boost — works with the . If you qualify for that program, Metro’s $40 per month unlimited plan could be had for $10 per month (and the one with perks could be $30 per month instead of its regular $60 monthly).

              Sarah Tew/CNET

When it comes to data under 10GB, Mint once again has the best value if T-Mobile’s network is solid in your area. Whereas Metro and Cricket charge $40 per month for one line and Boost has a $35 plan for 10GB of data, Mint beats them all on price.

Getting 10GB of 4G LTE/5G monthly data is $20 per month at Mint when purchased in 12-month increments for new users. After that, you can buy three more months at $35 per month ($105 total), six months at $25 per month ($150 total) or another year at $20 per month ($240 total).

Other options :Google Fi has a "bill protection" feature designed to refund you for data you don’t use, but with a maximum monthly charge of $80 per month for one line and 6GB of data and unlimited talk/text, I think you’re better off looking elsewhere instead of having to calculate how much data you’re using.

AT&T has an online offer of 16GB per month plan if you prepay the $300 for a full year (equating to $25 per month).

Tracfone doesn’t have a 10GB plan but has two other options directly above and below it. The first is an 8GB-per-month plan that runs $35 per month if you enable auto-refill, or $40 per month regularly. The provider does have a 24GB plan for one year that runs $199, though that 24GB is all the data you get for the year.

The perk with the AT&T and Tracfone plans is that any unused data carries over to the next month.

For the latter, if you’re looking for a prepaid provider on Verizon it’s hard to top what amounts to a monthly rate of $16.58.

              Sarah Tew/CNET

At $15 per month for 4GB of data Mint Mobile has a new customer deal that beats out Boost Mobile’s offer of $15 for 2GB of data and Cricket’s $30-per-month rate for the same amount of data. Tracfone has a 4GB data plan but that runs $25 when on auto-refill ($30 without).

Boost, however, has a $100 deal that for new customers.

That breaks down to $8.33 per month. If you don’t have Boost, find yourself largely on Wi-Fi and price is the biggest driver for you, this is the go-to pick if looking for a new service.

If you need a little more data, Mint is the way to go.

Verizon Prepaid has a 5GB plan that it lists as running $25 per month so long as you’re willing to commit to at least 10 months, but the math here can be tricky. The plan is normally $40 per month but that price will drop to $35 per month starting in the second month assuming you have automatic payments enabled. It will then fall to $30 per month if you keep the service for three months, before dropping another $5 down to $25 if you stick with the carrier past the ninth month.

T-Mobile has a including a $25 per month option with unlimited talk/text and 6GB of data (with an extra 500MB of data added to your plan every year). The carrier also has a $10 per month Connect option that includes 1,000 domestic minutes for talk, 1,000 domestic and 1GB of data.

As we said at the top, the best deal is the one that works best for you. But when it comes to price, assuming T-Mobile’s network works well in your area, it’s hard to top whatMint charges.

Iran’s seizure of the British-flagged tanker the Stena Impero on July 19 was widely seen as a tit-for-tat move after authorities in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar detained an Iranian tanker, although Tehran has denied any connection

The British-flagged oil tanker Stena Impero, which had been held off the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas for more than two months, set sail Friday, an Iranian shipping organisation said.

The ship’s seizure was widely seen as a tit-for-tat move after authorities in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar detained an Iranian tanker on suspicion it was shipping oil to Syria in breach of EU sanctions.

Tehran repeatedly denied the cases were related but a Gibraltar last month ordered the Iranian tanker’s release despite an 11th-hour US legal bid to keep it in detention.

"The Stena Impero started sailing from the mooring towards the Persian Gulf’s international waters as of 9:00 am (0530 GMT) today," Hormozgan province’s maritime organisation said on its website.

"Despite the vessel’s clearance, its legal case is still open in Iran’s courts," it added.

The tanker’s captain and crew have also "given a written, official statement that they have no claims."

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized the tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on July 19 after surrounding the vessel with attack boats and rappelling onto its deck.

It was impounded off the port of Bandar Abbas for allegedly failing to respond to distress calls and turning off its transponder after hitting a fishing boat.

Seven of its 23 crew members were released on September 4.

              By Md.

"There are around agen togel online bet 100 fisherman families here, but the fish stock in the river is mostly gone," he said.

Smaller businesses usually lack funding to install and operate effluent treatment plants, said activist Rabbi, urging the government to set up central treatment plants to serve industry clusters.

The city corporation is working to build eco-parks - ecological zones including forests, wetlands and recreational green spaces
              - along the banks of the main river and canals to protect water bodies and address climate change, said Mayor Ivy.

Despite growing migration, Narayanganj - like the vast majority of cities - lacks a formal strategy to deal with the challenges, while migration as a way of adapting to climate change pressures is not included in its ICLEI-backed climate action plan.

              FUNDING SHORTFALL

Insufficient finance is the key constraint to Narayanganj’s efforts to pursue a climate-smart development model, said Mayor Ivy.

The city corporation’s annual budget for 2021-22 is about $80 million, while in Rajshahi - which has less than half the population but is the main city of its administrative division northwest of Dhaka - it is more than $120 million.

"The example of Narayanganj will demonstrate how local governments could play a role in realising the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change," Rashid said.

has decided not to let Jake Tapper keep Chris Cuomo’s old 9pm primetime slotfollowing poor viewership
              - throwing a hurdle into plans for the anchor to become the ’face’ of the news channel as it pulls away from partisan reporting.
Tapper, one of the channel’s lead Washington anchors, had been tapped for the timeslot less than a month ago, ahead of this year’s .
At the time, the network had said the change could be temporary, setting a timeline for Tapper’s new gig set to end on November 11.
Sure enough, on Wednesday, a little over a week before that supposed deadline, the famously progressive network said in a statement that Tapper will be tapped out of primetime next Friday, upon the conclusion of that timeframe.
The decision is the latest in a series of sweeping changes enacted by the network as it strives to shed its perception of being too liberal under new CEO Chris Licht, who took the job in February, just months after Cuomo’sousting last December.
Since then, the station has failed to fill the slot long associated with the anchor, who lost the gig after trying to help his brother fight off a sexual harassment scandal.
Ratings for the hour have since suffered following Cuomo’s departure, despite splashy interviews with several high-profile guests.
The 52-year-old Cuomo, who manned the hour for three years, recently began a new job anchoring for the non-partisan network NewsNation, buthis primetime slot remains in limbo, previously manned by a series of rotating hosts as showrunners struggle to find the solution to its dwindling viewership.
CNN has walked back its decision to have Jake Tapper take over Chris Cuomo’s old 9pm primetime slot following poor viewership - throwing a hurdle into the network’s reported plans for the anchor to become the ’face’ of the network as it pulls away from partisan reporting.
The time slot has been vacant ever since the December 2021 ousting of Chris Cuomo, who headed the hour with great success for three years before being forced to resign for helping his brother Andrew Cuomo navigate a damning sex scandal

The rep added that upon ’the completion of that schedule,’ Tapper will return to hosthis longtime 4pm post on the political program ’The Lead.’
The network said it will announce further plans for its ever-shifting lineup ’in the coming days.’
Tapper’s tentative primetime tenure saw him engage in interviews with big names such as President Biden and movie star Dwayne ’The Rock’ Johnson - but the high- profile guests failed to save ratings for the failing hour.
New CNN boss Chris Licht, pictured here at the Vanity Fair Oscar afterparty in March, reportedly had wanted Tapper on the 9pm time slot permanently - but following poor ratings, those primetime aspirations were seemingly put to rest
At its height, the show managed just 854,000 viewers - a distant third behind Fox News’ ’Hannity,’ with 2.6 million viewers, and MSNBC’s ’Alex Wagner Tonight,’ with 1.6 million viewers.
Tapper’s audience has reportedly dipped even further since the network’s latest ratings release - seemingly throwing a monkey wrench into Licht’s reported plans for Tapper, a no-nonsense political commentator, to become the ’new face’ of the network.
Licht reportedly had wanted Tapper for the 9pm time slot permanently - but following the poor ratings, those aspirations were seemingly put to rest, dashing the primetime chances of someone who waswidely speculated to be among the top talent at the station in the running for the permanent gig.

As for the reasoning behind the network’s foregoing of Tapper, several observers noted the host’s sluggish ratings during the weeks he was hosting, as Licht and other network leaders work to retool the station’s editorial strategy and right diminished ratings.
Licht, who replaced ousted boss Jeff Zucker last February, has made a number of changes at CNN since taking the helm, turning heads as he strives to return the station to its roots with hard-hitting, non-partisan journalism free of punditry.

’By adding the insights, experience and strong voices of Alisyn and Laura, we will advance and expand on that coverage, creating something complimentary and compelling in primetime,’ Licht said of the decision - one of the biggest made by the boss in recent months amid his nonpartisan overhaul.
Tapper’s promotion came days after CNN announced a ’reimagined’ morning show featuring famously progressive anchor Don Lemon - despite the new CEO’s repeated pledges to move the network away from left-leaning commentary

Vegas, which won 10 in a row in April of 2021, leads the NHL with 13 victories and 26 points in 15 games. The Golden Knights completed a sweep of a five-game eastern road trip on Thursday with their ninth straight win, a 7-4 victory at Buffalo, as Jack Eichel scored his third career hat trick and finished with four points.
It was Eichel’s second game at KeyBank Center since a Nov.

4, 2021 trade to the Golden Knights for Alex Tuch and Peyton Krebs. Eichel, who left on controversial terms with the Sabres who were against his decision to have eventual disc replacement surgery in his neck, was booed each time he touched the puck. Eichel made a point to acknowledge the crowd after each of his goals.
"It’s satisfying to come in here and win," said Eichel, who has a team-best nine goals and 19 points. "I think that’s the most important thing for our group. They were desperate and they gave us everything that we could handle and we found ways to make the plays when we needed to."
"No one likes to see a teammate get booed, right ?" Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy added.

"I’m going to say it as simple as I can. It hurts everybody, right, especially if you are a close-knit team. So we’re happy for him."
After failing to make the playoffs for the first time in team history last season, Vegas heads home leading the NHL in both wins and points after one month of action.
"It’s pretty good," captain Mark Stone said of the start. "Probably the best start of my career. We’ve had good health, great goaltending. The defense has been good. Jack’s kind of leading the way offensively, but if you look down the board so many guys are chipping in offensively. That’s why we’re a good team, I think, because we have depth scoring. We’ve got to go home and carry the momentum."
Waiting for the Golden Knights is a St.

Louis team that ended an eight-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over visiting San Jose on Thursday. It was the team’s first win since a 2-0 blanking of Edmonton on Oct. 22.
Defenseman Calle Rosen scored the game-winner at 8 : 20 of the third period on a one-timer off a Robert Thomas pass.

It was Rosen’s fourth career goal and first of the season.
"It was obviously a good (feeling), for sure," St. Louis coach Craig Berube said of snapping the losing streak. "You lose as much as we have lately and it’s really not a good feeling. Got a win. It was a battle, but we got a win and did a lot of good things tonight."
The Blues now hit the road for three games, the final two of which will be part of the team’s first-ever Mom’s Trip.

Twenty-two mothers will join the Blues in Denver before the Monday night’s game with the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche and will then fly with the team to Chicago for Wednesday’s road trip finale. The mothers will attend morning skates, sit in on team meetings, ride on the team bus and also eat pregame meals with the squad.
"We’ve got a tough road trip coming up," Thomas said.

"Vegas, Colorado, Chicago — they’re all playing well. It’s a good time to go on a run."

Since making their first appearance as a couple in Anglesey in 2011, the Prince and have grown into their roles as a king and queen-in-waiting.
During their visit to Ynys Mon and Swansea on Tuesday, the royal couple looked relaxed as they met with RNLI rescuers and locals, before travelling south to Swansea.
During the appearance, which was the couple’s first visit to the home nation since they were given the titles Prince and Princess of Wales by King Charles, William and Kate wowed the crowds, with the Princess even making friends with a few children along the way.
Body language expert Judi James noted the Prince and Princess of Wales (pictured) looked more settled in their roles during yesterday’s appearance in Anglesey compared to 11 years ago
The body language expert noted that back in 2011, during the Princess of Wales’s first public appearance, Kate held her bag in front of her as a ’barrier’
It was symbolic that the royal couple, who will one day be King and Queen Consort, chose to visit Anglesey during their first visit to Wales in their new roles - where William’s then-fiance Kate Middleton had carried out her first royal engagement 11 years earlier.
And according to body language expert Judi James, the royal couple looked more at ease on this visit as they settle into their roles as Prince and Princess of Wales and have ’grown so much in terms of confidence and sociability’.

She said in the couple’s 2011 appearance in the north Wales town, they tended to ’pause and pose’ more, adding they were ’looking unsure about taking a more energetic and active approach to the public and their appearance’.
Judi explained this is known as a ’passive "here we are" approach’.
In contrast, she said their appearance yesterday was a ’there you are’ approach as they made steps to engage the crowd ’with a speedy-paced energy and enthusiasm as though greeting old friends’.

Judi said : ’Their body language is open and relaxed, when they used to self-diminish, keeping their arms tight to their sides in a self-hug of anxiety.’
Looking to the Princess of Wales in particular, Judi noted the placing of her handbag shows she is more at ease during the appearance.
’Kate used to hold her bag in front of her torso in a barrier ritual and William employed a nervous hand clasp,’ she said.
’Now they both walk with their arms hanging loosely at their sides or offer friendly waves to the crowd.’
She added the way the Prince and Princess of Wales smile at the crowd is also revealing as it differs from the smiles they offered to the public years ago.
’Years ago it was all about royal smiles, rather fixed-looking long-term smiles that were social rather than authentic,’ Judi said.
’Now they use flooding smiles that look natural and which form a tie-sign connection of rapport with the crowds. They also vary their smiles to empathetic, open mouthed grins of joy.’
Judi added the way the Prince and Princess relate to each other also shows their strong partnership, as she notes they now walk alongside each other.
She said : ’William and Kate now arrive side by side, mirroring each other but without any huddling or standing behind.
Body language expert Judi noted the way the Prince and Princess used to
Judi noted the couple (pictured in 2011) now walk side-by-side and ’mirror’ each other, which they did not do in their earlier public appearances
’Kate also moves forward with total confidence to greet children by ducking down to their height and offering small hugs and touches, even _double-bagging’ by waving and chatting to the parents at the same time.’
On a windy February day in 2011, Kate Middleton and Prince William visited the same community in Anglesey, where the now-Princess of Wales carried out her first royal engagement ahead of her wedding to Prince William two months later.
At the time, the couple were living in Anglesey, where William was working as an air sea rescue pilot for the RAF.
Kate beamed as she christened the new Hereford Endeavour lifeboat with a bottle of champagne while her husband-to-be lovingly watched on.
Recalling the event, RNLI volunteerDafydd Griffiths told magazine : ’They’re such friendly, down-to-earth people, lovely. I was quite surprised how down-to-earth they were to be honest, I think everyone will tell you that.’
Another local, Colin Edwards, had given Kate a framed picture of her husband-to-be, Prince William, as a child, to which she responded : ’Look at his knees !’
During the walkabout Kate was pictured in a Herringbone coat she had owned for at least five years, showing members of the public she was keen to recycle items of clothing - something the Princess of Wales has continued to do throughout her time making royal engagements.
Yesterday the Princess of Wales was wearing a 599 L.K. Bennett ’Spencer’ coat in red - which some suggested could be a nod to her late mother-in-law and former Princess of Wales, who was born Diana Spencer.
To pay tribute to the Welsh people, she also opted for Welsh brand Spells of Love’s 79 ’Alia Hoops’ in 18ct Recycled Gold.

It looks like every other brown garden snail.
But this snail, called Jeremy, is actually pretty special if you look more closely.
In fact it beat odds of one in a million to be born with a shell which spirals not in the normal right-handed, clockwise direction but left.

Jeremy the snail has a shell which swirls the opposite way to most other snails (pictured), and his snail genitals are a mirror image of a normal snail. Researchers hope the left-handed mollusc could reveal more about the genetic basis of a similar condition in humans
Bizarrely this may give Jeremy something in common with 1970s pop idol Donny Osmond, who reportedly has a rare condition placing his heart at the wrong side of his chest, on the right.
The same genes are believed to cause both this condition, dextrocardia, in people and to twist snails’ shells round the wrong way.

Jeremy was discovered close to a compost heap in London, and become an unlikely star.
The ’lefty’ snail, who is unable to mate with normal as his snails genitals are on the opposite side, is the subject of a nationwide campaign by Nottingham University to find a mate with a shell spiralling the same way.
Donny Osmond reportedly has dextrocardia, a rare condition in which his heart is on the opposite side - more on the right than on left of centre
WHAT DO A SNAIL FROM LONDON AND DONNY OSMOND HAVE IN COMMON ? It may sound like the opening line of a joke, but many may wonder what 70’s pop sensation Donny Osmond and Jeremy the snail have in common.
Both have an element of their biological body plan which flips their organs to a mirror image of what would normally be expected.
Donny Osmond reportedly has dextrocardia, a rare condition in which his heart is on the opposite side - more on the right than on left of centre.
Jeremy the snail has a shell which swirls the opposite way to most other snails, and his snail genitals are a mirror image of a normal snail.
Researchers believe that the same genes controlling basic body design are responsible in both the snail’s condition and indextrocardia.
They hope that by finding an equally rare mate for the ’left-handed’ snail they can study its offspring and zero in on the genes responsible for the mirror image body plan.
adverts.addToArray("pos" :"mpu_factbox")Advertisement Baby snails with the same condition could then be explored to find the gene which causes it.
It is hoped this could determine what flips the heart onto the wrong side of the body in humans, which can be linked with heart defects, and perhaps help to find a cure.
Dr Angus Davison, associate professor and reader in evolutionary genetics at Nottingham University’s School of Life Sciences, said : ’This really is an exciting find - I have been studying snails for more than 20 years and I have never seen one of these before.
’We are very keen to study the snail’s genetics to find out whether this is a result of a developmental glitch or whether this is a genuine inherited genetic trait.’
Brown garden snails are extremely common and Jeremy’s unusual shell might never have been spotted had a retired scientist from the Natural History Museum not happened to be passing a compost heap in Rayne’s Park, South West London.
Aware of Dr Davison’s interest in snail genetics, he got in touch and sent the creature north.
While the shells of regular snails are ’dextral’, spiralling in a right-handed, clockwise direction, Jeremy’s shell is ’sinistral’, going anti-clockwise.
The same genes are believed to cause dextrocardia, associated in a small number of people with heart defects which cut oxygen levels in blood pumped from the heart.
Donny Osmond reportedly has dextrocardia with situs inversus, which means his other internal organs are positioned wrongly too. It is said he only became aware of the condition after a doctor overlooked his appendicitis because his appendix was not where it was expected to be.
The condition, thought to affect one in 10, 000 people, is hoped to be figured out more clearly using data from Jeremy.
Researchers believe that the same genes controlling basic body design are responsible in both the snail’s condition and in dextrocardia, generating a mirror image of the typical layout of organs (stock image used)
But mapping the snail’s entire genome for clues would be a huge task. Dr Davison hopes Jeremy will have baby snails, as those with the same shell pattern, and without, will be easier to examine for the genes which cause this.
Unfortunately, as the mirror image of normal snails, Jeremy’s genitals are on the opposite side, making it harder to mate with them.
Dr Davison said : ’Snails are hermaphrodites meaning that if they want to they can reproduce on their own without the need for another mate. However, they don’ t really like doing this and from our perspective, the genetic data from offspring of two lefty snails would be far richer and more valuable to us.’
The hunt is now on for another one-in-a-million snail, with the public invited to search their hedgerows and plant plots.
Dr Davison added : ’There is a chance, because it is such a rare thing, that anyone who can find and identify another of these sinistral snails may even find themselves named as a contributor on a research paper we publish in the future as a result of this.’
Anyone who finds a sinistral snail should contact at the University of Nottingham.

The body language expert continued :’We can see Kate’s hand is held for a shake that goes on longer than usual.

’There is a _normal’ time for a handshake and when it goes on longer it can feel like a power gesture, though.’
Although Judi claimed the woman intended the handshake to make the Princess feel ’helpless’, the expert said it had the opposite effect.
She continued : ’Kate uses eye contact but her smile doesn’t miss a beat and, instead of looking away quickly and moving on to ignore the woman dismissively, she handles the moment well by making an _oh’ to suggest _what a pity’.

Examining the Princess’ verbal response, Judi claims Kate ’heard the heckler perfectly’ but kept her composure nonetheless.
She added : ’Will Kate turn out to be a gutsy queen ? She doesn’t even seem to glance around for her security to either alert them or to make herself feel safer by checking they were aware.

A local radio host died from a suspected heart attack while presenting his daily breakfast show.
Tim Gough, 55, was presenting his morning programme for GenX Radio Suffolk when the music stopped playing half way through a song, about an hour into his slot.
The music resumed a few minutes later but Mr Gough, who had been speaking just moments earlier, did not return and later the station confirmed he had passed away.
GenX Radio Suffolk posted on their social media accounts : ’It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to inform you, our dear friend and breakfast host Tim Gough passed away this morning whilst presenting his program.
’Our love to his family, son, sister, brother and mum.
’Tim was doing what he loved.

              He was 55 years old.’

The host, whose radio career dated back to 1986, had wished his listeners a good morning and was excited for the radio station to launch on DAB in a week.
He gave weather updates across Suffolk and just minutes before ’Grey Day’ by Madness stopped abruptly, he was talking about famous couples who have married in Bury, Suffolk, over the years.
The father-of-one spoke his final words after playing Brown Sugar by the Rolling Stones, commenting that it was the birthday of bass guitarist Bill Wyman, a Suffolk resident.
James Hazell, managing director of GenX Radio Suffolk, was on air from 9am and shortly before 11am he informed listeners of the ’devastating blow’.
He said : ’I speak to you this morning with frankly some tragic tragic news.
’At ten to eight this morning in the middle of Tim Cough’s breakfast show broadcast, he suffered a catastrophic cardiac episode - as it has been described.
’Despite the best efforts of the paramedics, who were on site very quickly, some 20 25 minutes doing what they could to revive to - it was not to be.
’It was in the middle of his program, he was doing something he loved to do.
He added : ’I really have no words at this stage, he was 55-years-old, very healthy.

Who knows why these things happened, but its happened.’
Tim was described as ’Suffolk born and bred’ and had been working in the radio industry since the 80s
Mr Hazelltold the East Anglian Daily Times that Mr Gough was ’a hugely experienced and highly talented broadcaster with an army of fans for his daily program.’
He added : ’To know Tim personally, as I did very closely for over 30 years, was to know a warm, caring, fun guy who myself and my family loved dearly.

We are heartbroken by the news.’
His profile on the radio’s website says : ’Tim is Suffolk born and bred, and grew up in a village close to Bury St Edmunds.
’His radio career has spanned over a quarter of a century, and began at Radio Orwell in 1986.
’He went on to present the breakfast show on Saxon Radio and SGR-FM, as well as appearing on Smooth Radio and various other radio stations in the East Midlands.
It added that the breakfast show on GenX Radio Suffolk was the first time Mr Gough got back behind the microphone in over a decade.
Condolences and tributes quickly poured in from fans of the local radio, which launched in January this year, following the sad announcement.
Linda wrote on Facebook : ’Such sad news.

It was so nice to hear his cheerful voice first thing in the mornings.’
Kelly-Anne tweeted : ’My darling friend. Doing what he loved doing but I can’t comprehend the loss.’

has revealed his desire for to fight as the co-main event of ’s trilogy bout with Leon Edwards next year.
Edwards claimed the welterweight title in emphatic fashion with an incredible head kick KO and the pair are set to meet again on UK soil.
That bout is likely to take place next March on the usual London card, although nothing has been formally announced.
Khamzat Chimaev remains unbeaten and is one of the top welterweight contenders
Kamaru Usman is set for a trilogy bout with Leon Edwards in the UK this year
UFC President Dana White previously said he wants Usman vs Edwards III in the UK
Two of the key players at 170-lbs are Covington and Chimaev who are yet to fight each other.

Chimaev remains unbeaten and is seen as one of the most fearsome prospects in MMA.

Another statement win would put him at the front of the queue for the next title shot.
And White, when asked if he was keen on putting him against Covington as the co-main event in the UK next year, told MacLife he was.
If both of those fights could be made, it would undoubtedly be the most historic event in UK MMA history.

Edwards is only the second British UFC champion and his profile is on the rise all the time.
Having been controlled for the majority of his rematch with Usman, he delivered a picture perfect head kick to knock out the long-reigning champion.
’Rocky’ would be in a commanding position with another win over the ’Nigerian Nightmare’ but it remains to be seen whether Covington would take the Chimaev fight.

MOSCOW, Aug 11 (Reuters) - The Russian Navy plans to hold exercises in the Black Sea to practice repelling underwater attacks by saboteurs, Russian news agencies on Thursday cited the defence ministry as saying.

The scenario would be based on pushing back an underwater attack by saboteurs from the sea, the ministry said.

Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine on Wednesday of using terrorist tactics to try to provoke a new conflict and destabilise annexed Crimea after Russia said it had thwarted two armed Ukrainian attempts to get saboteurs into the contested Black Sea peninsula.

Stating that while December 3 would be ’tight for me’ for a match with Fury, he laid down the gauntlet for a dust-up with Joshua later in the month.
He wrote ’If Fury and AJ aren’t fighting then I’ll step in. December 3rd is tight for me @Tyson_Fury, but @EddieHearn you can give your new best mate @frankwarren_tv a call and I’ll take the 17th situs slot mudah menang with AJ.

If Joshua accepted the challenge of Joyce, ruling out a meeting with Fury for good, then the Gypsy King could turn his attention to Andy Ruiz Jr to fill the December 3 gap.
Tyson’s father Fury recently name-checked Ruiz alongsideFilip Hrgovic and Luis Ortiz as possible alternatives as he considered the possibility of his son fighting Joshua ’doubtful’.

By Sarah Wu and Yimou Lee
TAIPEI, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen resigned as head of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Saturday after her strategy to frame local elections as showing defiance to China’s rising bellicosity failed to pay off and win public support.
The elections for mayors, county chiefs and local councillors are ostensibly about domestic issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic and crime, and those elected will not have a direct say on China policy.
But Tsai had recast the election as being more than a local vote, saying the world is watching how Taiwan defends its democracy amid military tensions with China, which claims the island as its territory.
The main opposition party the Kuomintang, or KMT, was leading or claimed victory in 13 of the 21 city mayor and county chief seats up for grabs, including the capital Taipei, compared to the DPP’s five, broadly in line with expectations and similar to the results of the last local elections in 2018.
"The results failed our expectations. We humbly accept the results and accept the Taiwanese people’s decision," Tsai told reporters at party headquarters as she quit as party head, which she also did after 2018’s poor results.
"It’s not like the DPP has never failed before," Tsai, who will continue serving as president until 2024, added.

"We don’t have time to feel sorry. We fell, but we will stand up again."
Tsai said she had rejected a resignation offer from Premier Su Tseng-chang, also a senior DPP member, adding she had asked him to stay in office to ensure her policies would be properly implemented.
The Cabinet said Su had agreed to stay due to the need for stability amid the "arduous" domestic and international situation.
China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said the result showed that mainstream Taiwanese public opinion was for peace, stability and "a good life", and that Beijing would keep working with Taiwan’s people to promote peaceful relations and to oppose Taiwan independence and foreign interference.
              ’RED’ ACCUSATIONS
Both the DPP and KMT, which traditionally favours close ties with China though strongly denies being pro-Beijing, had concentrated their campaign efforts in wealthy and populous northern Taiwan, especially Taipei, whose mayor from the small Taiwan People’s Party could not run again due to term limits.
The KMT has accused Tsai and the DPP of being overly confrontational with China, and of trying to besmirch the party for being "red" - a reference to the colours of the Chinese Communist Party.
It focused its campaign on criticising the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially after a surge in cases this year.
KMT Chairman Eric Chu celebrated their victory, but said they would also protect Taiwan’s freedoms.
"We will insist on defending the Republic of China and protecting democracy and freedom," he told reporters, using Taiwan’s official name.

"We will also work hard to keep regional peace."
China carried out war games near Taiwan in August to express anger at a visit to Taipei by U.S.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and its military activities have continued, though on a reduced scale.
The election took place a month after the 20th congress of China’s Communist Party, where President Xi Jinping secured an unprecedented third term in office
              - a point Tsai repeatedly made on the campaign trail.
Focus will now turn to the 2024 presidential and parliament election, which Tsai and the DPP won by a landslide in 2020 on a pledge to stand up to China and defend Taiwan’s freedoms.
Tsai is serving her second term in office and cannot stand again as president because of term limits.

A hairdresser who lost a staggering 70,000 in just one afternoon is urging women to seek help with gambling addiction after her own slot machine nightmare ruined her life.
Christine Tolaini, 39, a hairdresser from Wembley, , enjoyed gambling for as far back as she remembers - as a small child, she loved playing on the 2p and 10p machines at arcades.
At the age of 21, she went to for the first time, and realised she was more excited by gambling than her friends.
By the time she was 22, Christine even had a timeshare hotel room in Las Vegas, and visited once a year so she could feed her gambling habit.
Christine playing the slot machines in Las Vegas, which is known for being the world’s gambling capital.

During her 20’s, the hairdresser from Wembley had her very own hotel room timeshare in the US city, so she could indulge her love of situs slot gacor machines
The 39-year-old hairdresser has since turned her life around, but during the darkest days of her addiction, lost 70,000 in just one afternoon playing online slot machines
Despite the thrill of casinos, the real addiction didn’t start until a decade later when the hairdresser started online betting.
In 2016, Christine started to gamble away all her earnings and racked up hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of credit card debt.

Realising she had a serious problem, by the age of 34 she had started recovery for her addiction, but relapsed twice as she was lured back in the world of gambling by free online bet offers.
Like many addictions, the hairdresser described her habit as ’something fun she did on weekends’ - until it spiralled out of control.
The hairdresser is ’happier than ever’ now she has kicked her gambling habit after several relapses - but claims that sites can ’lure people in’
After 18 years of misery, Christine finally sought help, and is now urging other women to do the same, after falling back into bad habits when accounts she hadn’t closed deposited hundreds of pounds into her online gambling accounts
Christine said : ’I can’t even describe the feeling of it, I was hopeless, I didn’t know how I was going to get out of it.
’At first it was just a fun thing I did at weekends.
’It seemed different when I had to withdraw physical cash, it was easier to control.’
Six years ago, Christine won 150 from a 10p free bet and was soon playing online slots and online bingo every night, placing increasingly bigger bets until she reached breaking point.
Christine kept some of her accounts open during recovery as a ’safety net’ in case she felt the urge to gamble, but they ultimately led to her relapse and she has now closed her accounts for good
She lost one years’ worth of salary in an evening, amounting to 45k.
The second time she relapsed was in 2020, when she lost 70k in one afternoon, playing an online slot machine.
As a new survey revealed that female gambling is becoming more common due to the cost-of-living crisis, she said : ’I felt completely lost.
’I didn’t know what to do but I knew I needed help.
Seeing the GP didn’t help Christine, as she claims they ’didn’t know what to do with her’ when she broke down and told them she had a gambling problem - and credits GA (Gamblers Anonymous) for supporting her recovery
’I went to the doctors, and they didn’t know what to do with me.

Eventually I found a gamblers anonymous group.
’Now I am happy to see more women are coming forward and speaking out, I don’t feel so alone with it anymore.’

Cineworld plans to roll out its 4DX immersive auditoriums and Screen X 270-degree ’surround video’ screens to about 30 per cent of its 99 UK cinemas.
The move comes as cinemas begin to show delayed blockbuster films for the first time in months after lockdown measures forced them to shut.
During lockdown a number of production and distribution companies began offering their new films for a fee over streaming platforms like iTunes, Sky Store and Amazon.
The new Christopher Nolan spy movie Tenet, starring John David Washington, Michael Cain and Robert Pattinson will be a cinema exclusive release on August 26.
Cineworld’s exclusive 4DX screenings have stimulating effects such as motion, water, wind, scent and lighting - timed with precision to ’enhance what’s happening on screen’
Elizabeth Debicki, left, and John David Washington in a scene from ’Tenet’, one of the first major releases after cinemas reopened from lockdown
The latest digital first release is the live-action remake of Mulan, which will be available to stream on Disney+ for $29.99 - a UK release hasn’t been confirmed.
Mooky Greidinger, CEO of Cineworld said the immersive move would bring ’added value and additional excitement’ to the big screen that can’t be replicated at home.
4DX technology, already in place at a number of Cineworld locations - including London’s Leicester Square
              - includes moving seats, smoke machines and water.
According to a Cineworld 4DX is available in 31 4DX auditoriums, including their flagship site at Cineworld Leicester Square.
The auditoriums are designed to make viewers feel like they are part of the experience happening on screen and also include scents from the film.
’I think there are many items that are going to bring people back to the big screen from the small screen but one of them for sure is 4DX,’ Greidinger told .

              By Gabriel Araujo
SAO PAULO, Nov 12 (Reuters) - George Russell gave Mercedes their first win of the Formula One season in the Sao Paulo sprint on Saturday, with seven-times world champion team mate Lewis Hamilton joining him on the front row for Sunday’s Brazilian grand prix.
The 100-km race set the grid for the main event at Interlagos, the penultimate grand prix of the season, but also carried important points for some of the top eight finishers.
It turned out to be a 24-lap thriller, possibly the most entertaining sprint so far, with the Brazilian crowd treated to wheel-to-wheel racing, overtakes and clashes between team mates.
"That’s how we roll, baby," shouted Russell, who started third and powered past Verstappen on lap 15 after several failed attempts, after the chequered flag.
It was the Briton’s first victory in Formula One, even if he is still waiting for a full one.
              "They all count," he said.

"It was definitely a sweet feeling to cross that line in first position... it’s so great to see the progress we’re making as a team.
"It’s such a morale booster going into the winter regardless of the outcome tomorrow. This is a huge result for us."
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finished second at the chequered flag but the Spaniard will drop back to seventh on Sunday’s grid due to a penalty for exceeding his season’s engine allocation.
That will promote Hamilton from third, with race stewards clearing him and others of a potential infringement at the start.
              VERSTAPPEN FOURTH
Verstappen, who lined up on the front row at Interlagos alongside first time pole-sitter Kevin Magnussen’s Haas, finished fourth but will also move up a place on Sunday and remains a threat.
He complained of running over debris and made contact with Sainz’s Ferrari as the Spaniard overtook aggressively with five laps remaining.
Hamilton, who started eighth, also went past the Dutch 25-year-old.
Verstappen was the only front-runner to start on the medium tyres, with Russell on softs, and that seemed a mistake by a driver who has won a record 14 grands prix this season and both previous sprints.
"At the time I felt alright, it somehow didn’t work but even on a soft I think I was going to be too slow," he said. "Really, we just had way too much (tyre) degradation here today.
"I’m not sure if we can do a lot for tomorrow, but it can’t be worse than today."
Red Bull and Verstappen have already won both championships and are now chasing records, with the team on a run of nine wins in a row.
Mexican Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s team mate, finished fifth with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc sixth and McLaren’s Lando Norris seventh.
Magnussen, who secured an astonishing pole in Friday’s qualifying, took a point for Haas in eighth after being passed by Verstappen on lap three and dropping steadily down the order.
"It was always going to be unrealistic to keep those guys behind," he said.

"I didn’t want to try even because I knew the battle was going to be around P7 or P8. I didn’t want to lose any time getting overtaken."
Alpine’s Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon clashed twice, with the Spaniard first being forced wide and needing a new front wing and then hitting the rear of the Frenchman’s car when trying to pass.
"I lost the front wing thanks to our friend," said Alonso, who is joining Aston Martin at the end of the season and was handed a five second penalty plus two points on his licence for causing the second collision.
The Spaniard will start 18th and Ocon 17th.
Aston Martin had their own battles with Lance Stroll forcing four-times world champion team mate Sebastian Vettel on to the grass and collecting a 10-second time penalty.

The Canadian finished 17th, and Vettel ninth. (Writing by Alan Baldwin in London, editing by Andrew Cawthorne, Christian Radnedge and Clare Fallon)

Workers in Parliament are being asked whether their fathers are male or female in a move that has been branded ’ nonsense’.
Anyone applying for a Westminster security pass must give details of their parents including their names, dates of birth and nationalities.
But after a recent change by the authorities, applicants, including MPs’ staff, must now also list their mother and father’s identities.
Vetting forms seen by the Mail require employees to provide information about their ’birth father’ including their gender.

The choices on the online application are female, male or ’other’.

There is no option to ignore the question.
Employees must also state whether their birth mother is male, female or other.
One parliamentary staffer who had to fill in the new form told the Mail : ’I found it baffling to be asked what gender my birth father is when completing the parliamentary security vetting form.
’How could it possibly make sense to ask that question ? There is only one possible answer and in any case why do they have to know and why would they care if this has changed ?

              It’s nonsensical.’
The worker, who did not wish to be named, asked : ’Is there a reason my mother or father’s gender would affect my security clearance ?’
Former education minister Brendan Clarke-Smith described the requirement to specify parents’ gender as ’woke nonsense’ and said : ’Staffers will probably be thinking this is some sort of intricate psychometric test, rather than a serious question.
’I’m not sure how somebody’s father self-identifies is really relevant on a security check either.

It’s tick box meets Pandora’s box.’
Former education minister Brendan Clarke-Smith (pictured) described the requirement to specify parents’ gender as ’woke nonsense’
The House of Commons refused to say when the form had been updated or why, nor whether applicants are supposed to specify their parents’ legal sex or subjective gender identity.
A spokesman would only say in a statement : ’Parliament has a range of robust security vetting procedures, based on good practice and ensuring a consistent approach, however we do not comment on the specifics of our security processes.’
It is not the first time the Westminster authorities have been accused of introducing ’woke’ gender identity.
An option has been added to Parliament’s website allowing users to search for MPs via their gender identity including ’non-binary’, even though the concept is not legally recognised in the UK.
The 13billion revamp of the historic palace may also lead to the installation of a number of ’gender-neutral’ toilets anyone can use.
An attempt by some staff to turn a women’s toilet in the Commons into an ’inclusive’ facility in the summer was scuppered after an unauthorised gender-neutral sign was taken down.
